I have a 10-year old judgment against me from the City of Hampton while I lived on Langley Air Force Base and was enlisted in the USAF. I was NEVER a resident of the state of Virginia, since I was a NY resident while based in Hampton VA during my USAF years.
The City of Hampton made a paperwork error and started charging me Virginia State Car Tax. I didn't find out about it until after I had finished my 4-year enlistment. They sent the $2000 bill in back taxes and fines to a collection agency.
I spoke with the City of Hampton and asked them what I needed to do to fix this issue. They asked for my military paperwork and some other auto registration stuff. I sent them all the required paperwork to prove to them I did not have to pay this tax.
Then they realized their error and then stated that I owed them only a little bit of it because I owned a vehicle for 6 months with VA State tags on it after I left the USAF. So, then they wanted me to pay that fee, PLUS all of the late fees for the wrong, larger amount.
I agreed to pay them their $150 car tax for those 6 months, but told them I would not pay the rest, as they were fines levied against me for taxes I did not owe. They disagreed and said that the fines are there because I took too long to respond, even if I did not owe any taxes.
What do I do? I am sick of seeing this silly judgment on my record. I have 700+ credit score and get approved for loans without any issues, but I'd like to clear this off my record once and for all.
